Isle of Wight County Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption

Isle of Wight County takes the statewide home exemption for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total on a form that also asks for a Virginia driver’s license, a vehicle registered in the county, and a utility bill in the veteran’s name. Its September 2026 form lets a surviving spouse move; its page and the spouse’s signature block still do not.

Also called: property tax, real estate tax, Isle of Wight property tax, 100% disabled, surviving spouse.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Isle of Wight County's Commissioner of the Revenue takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption and the one-vehicle exemption on one application. The exemption covers the home and up to one acre, and a manufactured home whether or not the veteran owns the land. There is no income test, and the veteran refiles only if the principal residence changes. The form asks for more than the statute does. Besides the VA letter showing a disability that is 100% service-connected, permanent, and total, it asks for a copy of the veteran's Virginia driver's license and a vehicle registered in Isle of Wight County, a current utility bill for the home in the veteran's name, and, from a veteran exempt elsewhere, a letter from that locality giving the date its exemption ends. Section 58.1-3219.6 asks only for the application and the VA documentation. A veteran who does not drive, or whose utilities are in a spouse's name, should file the VA letter and ask the office what it will take instead. The county revised the form in September 2026 to say a surviving spouse "may move to a different principal place of residence", which is section 58.1-3219.5(B). Two older texts were not updated: the county's tax relief page still says the spouse qualifies while he or she "continues to occupy the real property", and the spouse's sworn certification on the same form still has the spouse declare "that I continue to occupy the above-listed physical address". A surviving spouse who has moved can strike that phrase and cite the statute. The page also says the residence "must be owned by the Veteran"; section 58.1-3219.5(D) and (E) also reach a life estate, the trusts it lists, and a home co-owned with someone else, with a prorated exemption.
