Isle of Wight County Real Estate Tax Relief for Permanent and Total Disability
Isle of Wight County relieves up to $2,000 of real estate tax a year for a permanently and totally disabled owner with 2026 income up to $59,300 and net worth up to $248,600, both indexed each year. A VA certification is accepted.
Also called: tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, income limit.
Isle of Wight County's relief for elderly and disabled owners, in section 15-33 of the county code, exempts part of the real estate tax on the home and up to one acre, or on a mobile home, of an owner who is 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled, meaning unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity because of an impairment expected to last for life or end in death. The code indexes the income and net worth limits each year to the CPI-W. For 2026 the county's page gives gross combined income up to $59,300, with the first $6,500 of each other relative's income left out, and net worth up to $248,600, excluding the home. Relief, each capped at $2,000 a year, is:
$0 to $34,300: 100%.
$34,301 to $42,700: 75%.
$42,701 to $50,900: 50%.
$50,901 to $59,300: 25%.
Applications are taken by appointment between January 1 and June 30. The page says a new application is needed every year. Section 15-33(e) asks for a full statement only every third year, with a short affidavit of no change in between.
The page accepts certification of the disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Railroad Retirement Board, or the Social Security Administration, as section 58.1-3213(D) of the Code of Virginia requires. Section 15-33(e)(2) of the county code still names only Social Security or two doctors. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it.
