Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Nineteenth Judicial Circuit runs veterans treatment courts under section 394.47891 of the Florida Statutes; see the Florida entry. Its problem-solving courts page describes Indian River County's: "a judicially supervised treatment program for those people charged with a crime who have previously served in the United States Armed Services. Our program's goal is to help those affected with a mental health/substance use disorder that led them into the criminal justice system." How it works. Participants appear regularly before Judge Nicole Menz and follow a treatment plan that may include outpatient or inpatient treatment, sober living, random drug testing, counselling, education or employment programmes, self-help groups and medication management. "Each defendant upon entering the program will be assigned a mentor." Two ways in. As a diversion on a plea, where "when the defendant completes the VTC program successfully, their plea is withdrawn and their criminal charges are dismissed"; or as a condition of probation, where completion can bring early termination but the charges stand. A defendant who is interested should "consult with your lawyer about your options for your case." Who to call. Veteran's Treatment Court Coordinator Yamile Dominguez, [email protected], 772-207-6784. The circuit's handbook was last updated in February 2025.
