Its mission is "To honor the service of Imperial County veterans, their spouses, and dependents by ensuring they receive the benefits they have earned with respect, courtesy, and professionalism." The office says plainly that it "is not a Federal Veterans Affairs office. However, the VSO and VSR staff members are certified by the California Department of Veteran Affairs Office (CDVA), National Association of Veteran Services Officers (NACVSO), American Legion (AL), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and related veteran organizations to assist and represent veterans, spouses and dependents with all benefits and claims." On August 11, 2026 the Board signed the CalVet Subvention and Medi-Cal Cost Avoidance certificates for fiscal year 2026-27, which keep the State's subvention money coming to the office; the office answers the county's Medi-Cal and behavioral-health referrals and spends all of that money on its own salaries and benefits. On March 3, 2026 the Board backed the county's Congressionally Directed Spending request to move the office into the Imperial Veterans Hall in the City of Imperial, "to improve access to veterans' services, including benefits counseling and claims assistance, through a more functional and accessible public facility, while preserving the Hall's continued community use"; the Board ratified the signed letters, and the Veterans Advisory Council's own, on March 24, 2026, when it also added $1,500 to the office's budget for computer hardware. Until a move is funded and finished, the office stays at 217 South 10th Street.
