Idaho Veterans Financial Assistance Grants

Emergency grants of up to $1,500 from the Idaho Division of Veterans Services for an honorably discharged veteran now living in Idaho who entered service from Idaho or has lived in the state five years, where the emergency happened within 90 days of the request; the Office of Veterans Advocacy takes requests (208-780-1380).

Also called: financial assistance, emergency grant, $1,500, 90 days, IDVS, shelter, fuel, necessities.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Idaho Division of Veterans Services' State Benefits page: "Provides up to a $1,500 grant, in cases of extreme emergency, to Veterans who were discharged from the military honorably and are current residents of Idaho. Must have entered the military from Idaho, or lived within the state for at least 5 years. The event or emergency must have occurred within 90 days of the request." The grant is a Division policy (IDVS-PO-19-01, Emergency Relief for Veterans; the page's link to it no longer opens), not a statute, so the fund and its rules can change. The 90-day window is the condition that disqualifies most late requests: a veteran who covers a crisis on a credit card and asks six months later is outside it. Apply at the time of the emergency, even while trying to solve it another way. There is no disability rating requirement. "Honorably" is the page's word; Idaho Code 65-203 defines a veteran as one separated under honorable conditions after 90 days of continuous active duty, or sooner for a service-connected disability, so ask about a general discharge. For assistance, contact the Office of Veterans Advocacy, 208-780-1380; its service officers can also connect a veteran to VA pension and emergency programs, county assistance and the service relief societies. Idaho also runs an Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program through the Idaho Department of Labor, for veterans released from jail or prison within the last 12 months: classroom, on-the-job, occupational and apprenticeship training, upgrade and retraining, and money for work clothing and boots, transportation, childcare, vehicle repairs and rent. Ask a veterans' representative at an American Job Center (labor.idaho.gov).
