The designation. The Idaho Transportation Department's brochure (revised November 16, 2023): "You must present an acceptable document to an Idaho driver's license office showing proof of honorable discharge from military service, a valid active-duty identification, or proof of having a veteran license plate." The accepted documents include the DD-214 (member copy 4), DD-215 and DD-217, the National Archives' GSA 6954 and NA 13038 and 13041, the NGB-22, the older service forms, a VA verification of service letter, a military retired ID card, a 100% disabled veteran card or letter, and a VA-issued Veteran Identification Card. "There will be no additional charge to add the veteran designation when obtaining a new or renewed Idaho driver's license or identification card. There will be a duplicate fee to add a veteran designation at any other time"; the Division of Veterans Services gives the duplicate fee as $15. "The designation is permanent." Active duty. Idaho Code 49-319(9): a licence issued before active duty in the armed forces, or to an immediate family member accompanying the service member, "shall remain in full force and effect and shall, upon application, be extended for a period of four (4) years as long as active duty continues", or is renewed in person without knowledge or skills tests if it expired during active duty, and stays valid for 60 days after release from active duty. Separately, any Idaho licence can be renewed up to 25 months before it expires (section 49-319(1)(e)), so a service member can renew before a deployment. There is no disability rating requirement. Apply at a county driver's licence office. A veteran who cannot find the discharge papers can get help from the Division of Veterans Services' service officers.
