Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Idaho operates two state veterans cemeteries: the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise, in the foothills off Horseshoe Bend Road, and the 40-acre Idaho State Veterans Cemetery - Blackfoot, serving more than 20,000 eastern Idaho veterans. Both offer full casket burial, in-ground and columbarium niches for cremated remains, and a scattering garden. Eligibility. The Division: "The eligibility requirements for burial at an Idaho State Veterans Cemetery follow the National Veterans Cemetery eligibility requirements and Idaho law. There is no requirement to be a resident of the state of Idaho." Generally that is a veteran discharged under conditions other than dishonorable who meets the minimum service rule, a qualifying Guard member or reservist, and an eligible spouse or dependent child. Each veteran, Guard member or reservist is entitled to one plot, shared with a spouse; two married veterans may have side-by-side plots. What it costs. The cemetery information sheet for fiscal year 2027: "There is no internment fee for eligible veterans. There is an interment fee for eligible veteran spouses, and dependent children", and also for Guard members, reservists and their families. "The interment fee is equal to the current 'VA Burial Plot Allowance' and is subject to change each fiscal year": $1,032 for fiscal year 2027. An upper casket burial plot carries a $700 first-interment fee, and a Guard or reserve grave marker is $400 for a casket or $250 for an urn or scattering. Fees are due on the day of interment; the cemetery takes no pre-payments. The VA provides the headstone or marker for a veteran and spouse. Pre-registration. "Pre-Registration is a means to verify eligibility in advance", at no cost; it does not reserve a specific plot or oblige the family to use the cemetery. An Honor Guard detail of at least two uniformed members is provided for the committal service of an eligible veteran. A national cemetery too. The VA's Snake River Canyon National Cemetery at Buhl, Idaho's first national cemetery, opened in 2020 under the National Cemetery Administration's Rural Initiative, so a family has three choices in the state. Contact the cemetery office, or the Division of Veterans Services (208-780-1300), before need.
