Humboldt County Recorder: Recording a DD-214 Free, With the Cautions Spelled Out
The Humboldt County Recorder (Tia Lange, 775-623-6412) has a dedicated Military DD214 page: recording is free "as a courtesy", the page warns that records are public and cannot be unrecorded, and Social Security numbers are redacted before public release.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder, Tia Lange, discharge papers, NRS 419.020, redacted, public record, Winnemucca.
NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Humboldt County Recorder is one of the Nevada offices that publishes a page about it (read 2026-10-26), and the page is the honest kind: it makes the free recording a courtesy of the office and puts the trade-offs in front of the veteran first.
"RECORDING MILITARY SEPARATION DOCUMENTS. When an individual separates from the military service, they receive a DD214 Form (military separation document). The military service organizations may suggest recording the form to ensure easy availability of a certified copy of the document if the original were to become lost or destroyed. However, the Humboldt County Recorder's Office would like to make you aware of the following before doing so: The Recorder's Office is a public record office, which means anyone can view your recorded document. All records are available to the public to view and purchase copies. NRS 247.090. Once a document is recorded, it becomes an official record and CANNOT be unrecorded. Recording your DD214 Form is not mandatory. If you elect to record your DD214, as a courtesy, the Recorder's Office does not charge for the recording. Social Security Numbers are redacted prior to the release of the document for public viewing."
The office, Tia Lange, Recorder, with Cecilia Ruiz and Camisha Ross deputies, is at 25 W. Fourth Street, Winnemucca, (775) 623-6412, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its indexes and images from January 1, 1996 (and hit-or-miss back to 1963) are online, unofficial copies watermarked "COPY", with official copies at $1 a page. Recording a discharge is always optional, and the page says so.
