Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Hingham grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessing Department’s Veterans Exemptions table prints $823 under clause 22, $1,543 under 22A, $2,572 under 22B, $3,087 under 22C, 100 per cent under 22D, $2,057 under 22E and 100 per cent under 22F and 22H. Each dollar amount is its statute doubled and raised by the fiscal 2026 adjustment of 2.9 per cent, one year’s adjustment on the doubled figure - the fiscal 2027 compounded figure would be $845.42 under clause 22 - which is what clauses 22I and 22J at 100 per cent produce with a first application in fiscal 2026. The page names no option, and no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm. The Veterans’ Services page names Shannon Burke the Veterans’ Services Director at 781-741-1440, where the EOVS directory lists the same office. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Hingham Veterans’ Services: Shannon Burke, Veterans’ Services Director. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
