The Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller is Hillsborough County's recorder. Section 28.222(3)(d) of the Florida Statutes requires the Clerk to record the part of a discharge certificate that shows the character of service, "without cost to the veteran", with the county paying the recording charge; see the Florida entry. What the Clerk's pages say. The Recording Department's page lists a military discharge among the documents that cannot be shown on a public website under section 28.2221, and offers removal of one that is displayed, by written, notarised request to [email protected] or at any of the Clerk's three locations, with no fee. Recorded discharges since January 4, 1965 can be viewed on the public workstations in Official Records or through the Clerk's $100-a-year web subscription for those entitled to restricted records. What they do not say. Neither the Recording page nor the Fees and Fines schedule mentions that recording a discharge is free; the schedule prints the ordinary $10 first page and $8.50 for each further page, and $2 to certify a copy. A veteran recording a DD-214 should cite section 28.222(3)(d) at the counter rather than pay. The statute does not waive the charges for certified copies. At the counter. The Clerk lets active military members and veterans skip to the front of the virtual queue with a button at the check-in kiosks. Help finding or replacing a DD-214 comes from the county's Veteran Community Services.
