Highlands County Clerk: Recording Discharge Papers Free

The Highlands County Clerk's official records page says a certificate of discharge, separation or service "shall be recorded without cost to the veteran"; the Clerk e-records military discharges, and an online image of a recorded discharge can be withheld from the public website on request.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, clerk, official records, discharge papers, 28.222, Sebring, redaction.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Florida clerks record discharges without charge to the veteran under section 28.222; see the Florida entry. The Highlands County Clerk of Courts' official records page lists among the instruments it records "That portion of a certificate of discharge, separation, or service which indicates the character of discharge, separation, or service of any citizen of this state with respect to the military, air, or naval forces of the United States. Each certificate shall be recorded without cost to the veteran, but the clerk shall receive from the board of county commissioners or other governing body of the county the service charge prescribed by law for the recording." Practicalities. The Clerk's e-recording page lists "Military Discharge" among documents accepted electronically, and its redaction page restates the statute that keeps images of military discharges off the public website; a veteran who recorded one before that rule can ask for removal.
