Hidalgo County Clerk: Free Recording of Military Discharges

The Hidalgo County Clerk's fee schedule lists a DD-214 veterans discharge at no fee, as Local Government Code 192.002 requires, and a discharge recorded since September 2003 is confidential. The Clerk's own Veteran's Services page is empty.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, discharge, county clerk, recording, 192.002, 552.140, Edinburg.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The County Clerk's 2024 fee schedule lists "DD214 - Veterans Discharge: No Fee", where other recordings are $35 for the first page and $4 for each page after since Senate Bill 1612 repealed the $1 filing fee. Section 192.002 requires the free recording, and Government Code 552.140 keeps a discharge recorded since September 1, 2003 confidential, with free copies for the veteran and the relatives and representatives it lists; see the Texas entry. The Clerk's website has a "Veteran's Services" page in its menu, but the page carries only the menu and no content, so its procedures for releasing a recorded discharge are not published. Ask the Clerk's recording division in Edinburg (956-318-2100), and bring the list in section 552.140 if fewer people are named.
