Henry County: Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemptions (L16 to L19)
Henry County gives the State's disabled veteran homestead exemption in four age bands: from 65 it adds a full exemption from State tax, and from 70 a full exemption from school taxes. Its chart still shows the 2025 amount, $121,812, against $126,526 for 2026, and its 2027 application asks for a permanent and total rating, an honorable discharge and filing by April 1, where Senate Bill 566 allows filing until the appeal deadline.
The exemption is the State's, under Code section 48-5-48; see the Georgia entry. In Henry County the Assessor's Office decides homestead applications (140 Henry Parkway, McDonough, 770-288-7999), which can be filed online, by post, or at the Tax Commissioner's offices in McDonough and Stockbridge.
The codes. Henry's chart lists four disabled veteran codes, which also cover an unremarried surviving spouse or minor children and the spouse of a service member killed in action:
L16, under 65: the amount off State, county, school bond, school operating, water and city taxes.
L17, at 65: a full exemption from State tax and the amount off the rest.
L18, at 68: the same as L17.
L19, at 70: full exemption from State and school taxes and the amount off county, water and city taxes.
The amount. The chart is headed 2025 and shows $121,812, the 2025 federal maximum. For 2026 the Department of Revenue's figure is $126,526.
What the application asks for. Its instructions ask for a "Letter from Veteran's Administration indicating the effective date of the veteran's disability rated at 100% or paid at 100% due to unemployability, service connected, permanent and totally, honorable discharge". Section 48-5-48 needs neither permanence nor more than a discharge under honorable conditions, and also takes a VA statutory award for loss or loss of use of a foot or hand or loss of sight, the wartime limb-loss routes and adapted housing eligibility, none of which the form names. It does not mention the three-year refund in section 48-5-48(g).
Deadline. The Tax Commissioner's page and the application for tax year 2027 both say applications must be received or postmarked by April 1. Senate Bill 566 of 2026 rewrote Code section 48-5-45 so that an application counts for the year if filed by the final date to appeal that year's assessment notice; cite the Act if an application after April 1 is refused. The form also asks that every applicant be registered to vote in Henry County.
Henry's own exemptions. A homeowner under 65 who is totally disabled, shown by letters from two Georgia physicians or one with a Social Security award letter, gets L12: $50,000 off school taxes and $15,000 off county taxes. Henry's senior school exemptions rise with age to a full school exemption at 70, and a disabled veteran's codes already carry the larger amount.

Gate
Rule
100% service-connected
One path is a 100% rating; the form asks for permanent and total, the statute does not. Statutory awards for loss of limbs or sight, and adapted housing eligibility, are other paths the filter does not test.
Paid at the 100% rate for unemployability
Individual unemployability paid at the 100% rate qualifies, and the form says so.
