Hartford Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Hartford grants the state veterans’ exemptions and no local option of its own. Its page doubles the regular exemption for a veteran under the state income limit, printed as $40,300 single or $49,100 married, or $18,000 and $21,000 for a veteran rated 100 percent.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Hartford.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Hartford’s assessor page describes the veterans’ exemption under C.G.S. 12-81(19) for a veteran who served at least 90 days in a period of war and filed the DD-214 with the Town Clerk before October 1. A veteran with a VA disability rating gets the disability exemption under 12-81(20) whether or not the service was in wartime, on filing the rating with the assessor. Applications are taken in person only, at City Hall, 550 Main Street, room 108. A veteran under the state income limit gets twice the regular exemption under 12-81g(a), counting all income except VA disability payments. The page gives the limit “for the October 1, 2024 Grand List” as $40,300 single and $49,100 married, and for a veteran rated 100 percent as $18,000 and $21,000, not counting Social Security. The $40,300 and $49,100 are the amounts OLR’s survey gives for 2023; OPM’s memo of December 12, 2024 set $45,200 and $55,100 for the 2025 grand list. Ask the assessor which limit applies to the current filing. Hartford has no municipal option. Its Code of Ordinances has no veterans’ property tax exemption, and the city told OLR’s 2023 survey it offered none. A veteran rated permanently and totally disabled at 100 percent has the dwelling exempt under 12-81(83), which is state law, and the page also offers the veterans’ exemption on a leased vehicle.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
