Harris County Board of Tax Assessors: Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption

Harris County's Board of Tax Assessors (Courthouse, 102 North College Street, Hamilton, 706-628-4958) takes the State's disabled veteran homestead exemption - the 2026 amount is $126,526 off assessed value - and verifies every homestead application, a disabled veteran's included, under its own residency policy effective July 14, 2026, though its checklist names no veteran exemption of its own.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's (O.C.G.A. 48-5-48); the Georgia entry gives the amount, the rating tests (a 100% rating, or pay at 100% for unemployability, or the statutory losses of limbs or sight) and the 2026 filing rules. What the county's own policy says. The Board of Tax Assessors' Homestead Exemption Residency Checklist - "Harris County Board of Tax Assessors | Policy effective 7/14/2026" - is the county's procedure for every homestead application, a disabled veteran's among them. It requires that the applicant "occupied this property on January 1" and that "this is my primary and legal residence", that no other homestead exemption is claimed, and "choose any three (3)" proof documents "dated within the last 60 days" showing the owner's name and the property's physical address: a power, water or gas bill, a landline phone bill, a mortgage statement, a Georgia driver's licence or identification card, vehicle registration or voter registration, or other evidence the Chief Appraiser requests - "NOT ACCEPTED: Cell phone or cable bills". A P.O. box or rural route does not disqualify but takes a sworn statement that the property is the primary residence and no other exemption is claimed in Georgia or another state. The Board "may verify" through property inspections, utility accounts, voter and motor vehicle records, government databases and third-party services; "missing documentation may result in denial", with appeal rights under Georgia law. The checklist cites O.C.G.A. 48-5-40, 48-5-44, 48-5-45, 48-5-47, 48-5-299, 48-5-300 and 48-5-306, and says it "summarizes the Board's Policy for Verification of Residency for Homestead Exemption Applications and does not replace the full policy". Against the law now. The checklist names no disabled veteran exemption and no amount; the State's amount for tax year 2026 is $126,526 (the Department of Revenue's memorandum of December 31, 2025), and the veteran proves the rating with the VA letter showing whichever test applies. Senate Bill 566 of 2026 lets a new homeowner file through the year, up to the last day to appeal the assessment notice (see the Georgia entry). How to apply. The Board of Tax Assessors, Harris County Courthouse, 102 North College Street, Hamilton, GA 31811, 706-628-4958; the Tax Commissioner's office takes the application ("You may apply for homestead exemption in the Tax Commissioner's office", FAQ) - Tax Commissioner Wanda Bates, Courthouse, 102 North College Street, P.O. Box 152, Hamilton, GA 31811, 706-628-4843, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Board's Forms page carries the Residency Checklist; the checklist is dated within-60-days documents, so bring fresh ones.
