Harris County Clerk of Superior Court: Military Discharge Recording

The Harris County Clerk of Superior Court, Courthouse, 102 North College Street, Hamilton (706-628-4944, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) records a veteran's discharge; the State makes recording free and keeps recorded discharges closed 50 years except to the veteran, family and agents, who get copies free - the Clerk's own page publishes no discharge practice, so the statute carries it.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, discharge, recording, no fee, Clerk of Superior Court, 15-6-72, 706-628-4944, Hamilton, Pine Mountain, Waverly Hall, Shiloh, Ellerslie, Cataula, Mulberry Grove.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State rule. O.C.G.A. 15-6-72 makes recording free and lets the veteran, a spouse or next of kin, an attorney in fact, a legal representative or their attorney examine a recorded discharge and get copies free, with identification, for 50 years (see the Georgia entry on discharge recording); quote the statute if a copy fee is asked. What the county's page says. The Clerk of Superior Court's page on the county site gives the office and hours - Harris County Courthouse, 102 North College Street, P.O. Box 528, Hamilton, GA 31811; 706-628-4944; Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. - and links its Civil & Criminal Filings, Clerk of Court Calendar and Real Estate Records; it publishes nothing about military discharges, so the free recording rests on the statute (docs/COUNTY-REVISIT.md). The Tax Commissioner's FAQ names the "Clerk of Superior Court deed room" as where a warranty deed copy is obtained, the same records room a discharge is filed in.
