Hanover County Vehicle Tax Discount for Certain Disabled Veterans

Hanover gives a reduced personal property rate on one vehicle of a veteran with limb loss, blindness, or a permanent and total service-connected disability, at any rating, but not if the household already has a vehicle under the 100% exemption.

Also called: car tax, reduced rate, discount, personal property, amputee, blind.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 22-50(b) of the Hanover County Code puts one motor vehicle owned and regularly used by a veteran in the class in Code of Virginia section 58.1-3506(A)(19) into a separately taxed classification, which the county calls the Disabled Veteran Personal Property Discount. The county page and code state the routes as the statute does: loss, or loss of use, of a leg, arm, or hand; blindness; or permanent and total disability, service-connected and certified by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services. Limb loss or blindness qualifies at any rating. Hanover adds one limit the statute does not require. The discount does not apply when the veteran or the veteran's spouse has a vehicle exempt under the county's 100% permanent and total exemption in section 22-53. Some other localities let a veteran stack the two on different vehicles; Hanover does not. The county's published rate table lists only the general $3.57 rate and does not print the discounted rate.
