The office. The Hamilton County Veterans Service Office is in the courthouse, 1111 13th Street, Suite 1, Aurora, NE 68818, phone 402-694-4477, [email protected], open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Veterans Service Officer is Mike Irons. The county's page says the officer "assists veterans and their families to obtain county, state, and federal benefits to which they may be entitled under law" and "will gather the information necessary to develop a claim, file the claim and track their claim", and lists the county's own services as Veterans Aid (see that entry) and grave markers and flag holders, beside State help with the veterans homes, Nebraska Veterans Aid, homestead exemptions, hunting and fishing permits and military discharges. The Clerk records a DD-214, which may also be filed with the office. The board. The Boards & Commissions page lists the Veteran's Service Board - Jimmy Hough (VFW, to January 2028), Roger Kruse (VFW, January 2027), Al Vetter and Dave Owen (American Legion, January 2026), Mike Irons (VFW Commander, January 2027) and Ron Elge (American Legion, January 2028) - and Commissioner Nancy Salmon as the Board's veteran officer liaison; the Veteran Services page still shows an older roster whose terms ended in 2020 to 2023. Clay County. Hamilton County's budget lists a September 1, 2014 agreement with Clay County to share veterans services for $2,291.67 a month. On March 30, 2026 the Board voted to terminate the Contract for Interlocal Services and Cooperation for Clay County and the Veterans Service Office, effective May 1, 2026. Clay County's own minutes show the other side: its Board received the notice on March 31, paid the Hamilton County Treasurer its last $2,291.67 "VSO Contract" in the April 28, 2026 claims, and on May 26, 2026 appointed Nuckolls County's officer, Kady Schnitker, as Clay County's own Veterans Service Officer from June 1, 2026, so Clay County veterans now go to its office in Clay Center (see the Clay County entry), not to Aurora. The Board's year. The Board approved a repair of the Veterans Service Office floor by Kingery on August 24, 2026, and on October 5, 2026 decided to keep the original plan and lay the carpet already bought; the business administrator reported on the work through the autumn. The money. The filed 2025-2026 budget gives the office (0100-803) $60,832.00, against $57,335.79 spent in 2024-2025, including $1,500.00 for grave markers and flags.
