Hall County Veterans Aid Fund

Hall County’s veterans service committee pays temporary emergency aid for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical needs under section 80-102; the county’s page still asks for wartime service and an honorable discharge, tests the 2024 amendment removed, and the county set no veterans’ aid levy for 2026-2027.

Also called: county veterans aid, CVA, 80-102, emergency aid, LB1300, wartime era, six months, Grand Island, Wood River, Cairo, Doniphan, Alda.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The county's page. Hall County describes its County Veterans Aid fund as "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items. The applicant applies through the County Service Office in Hall County, and "This is an 'aid' program so the veteran must demonstrate an 'inability' to meet the obligation to pay these bills, via an application." Questions go to (308) 385-5065. What the page gets wrong. The same page says eligible veterans are persons who "received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'", with one year in Nebraska and six months in Hall County. Section 80-102 no longer reads that way: LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the requirement that the veteran served "during a period of war as defined in section 80-401.01", so subdivision (1)(b) now asks only that the person served in the armed forces, was discharged or separated honorable or general (under honorable conditions) or died in service or as a direct result of it, and has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county. A peacetime veteran, or one with a general discharge, who is turned away on the page's wording can point to the statute. Husbands and wives, surviving spouses and minor children under eighteen are covered, and last-illness and burial expenses where a veteran or surviving spouse dies with no next of kin. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the levy rules. What the county levies. The 2026-2027 tax rates sheet in the Board's October 20, 2026 packet lists a Veteran's Aid fund at a levy of 0.00 on $8,581,712,408 of valuation, so the fund raises no property tax this year; the committee pays aid from what the fund holds or what the Board appropriates. No posted record gives the fund's balance or what it paid. The State's own emergency fund, the Nebraska Veterans' Aid fund, is applied for through the same office (see the Nebraska entry).
