Halifax County Vehicle License Fee Exemptions

Halifax County levies an annual local vehicle license fee whose amount is set by board resolution on file in the county administrator’s office (the FY2027 budget books $1,100,000 of motor vehicle license revenue), and section 20-800 levies it "[e]xcept as provided in Code of Virginia, § 46.2-755" - which bars the fee on the one vehicle of a veteran with Disabled Veteran plates.

Also called: license fee, decal, registration fee, 46.2-755, POW, Medal of Honor, car tax.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Article XV of Chapter 20 of the Halifax County Code levies an annual local vehicle license fee on motor vehicles and semi-trailers "[e]xcept as provided in Code of Virginia, § 46.2-755" (section 20-800). The license year runs January 1 to December 31 (section 20-803), the fee is refundable when the vehicle is no longer owned at the start of the license year, and failure to pay is a class 4 misdemeanor with a fine of $25 to $250 (section 20-810). Section 20-801 sets the amount "as adopted by the board of supervisors and on file in the county administrator's office" - the county posts no fee schedule, and the adopted FY2027 budget books $1,100,000 of motor vehicle license revenue. The state bar in section 46.2-755(B) of the Code of Virginia prohibits a county license fee on the one vehicle of a veteran with Disabled Veteran plates and on the qualifying vehicles of former prisoners of war and Medal of Honor, Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipients, and section 20-800's own "except as provided" clause adopts that limit. A veteran who is billed one anyway should ask the Treasurer and cite section 46.2-755(B). The code names no veteran exemption of its own beyond the state bar.
