Halifax County charges a $75 solid waste disposal fee. The Board of Supervisors' minutes of August 3, 2026 record the Solid Waste Authority's "Consideration of Solid Waste Fee Exemption": "a possible exemption from the County's $75 solid waste disposal fee for veterans determined to be 100% disabled. The matter arose after individuals reportedly appeared at the Treasurer's Office with documentation indicating that disabled veterans were exempt from the fee." Chair Roller "expressed concern regarding [the documentation's] authenticity and whether the document may have been generated from a" - the minutes' sentence is cut off at the page break - and members discussed whether the statute identified specific localities and whether the Authority had authority to grant the exemption. Action was "moved to August 18, 2026", and the Board's minutes on file record no outcome. As it stands, no veteran exemption from the solid waste fee appears in the county code or on the county's site. A 100% disabled veteran who is billed the fee should ask the Treasurer whether the Authority has since adopted an exemption, and cite the August 3, 2026 minutes. The county code's section 20-204 exempts certain persons from the E-911 tax, not the solid waste fee.
