Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Haines Borough Code 14.20.055: "A veteran who is the high bidder and who qualifies under HBC 14.20.050 and subsections (B) and (C) of this section shall be eligible for a 25 percent reduction from the amount of the bid over and above actual surveying and development costs after being notified that the veteran is the high bidder at a borough land sale." Who qualifies. Besides the general bidder qualifications in HBC 14.20.050, the bidder must submit proof with the bid of an honorable discharge and of at least 90 days of active duty in the U.S. armed forces or the Alaska Territorial Guard. Limits. The preference may be used only once in a lifetime, and land bought with it may not be transferred for five years except to heirs on the purchaser's death, as security for a loan, or for other good cause the land manager finds. How sales run. The Assembly must pass an ordinance to sell borough land, after the Planning Commission classifies it; buyers pay 5 percent down and the balance in ten annual payments at 10 percent, and pay closing costs, as the borough's 2023 housing working group memo summarized Title 14. Watch the borough's land sale notices and include the DD-214 with the bid.
