Guilford County's veterans office, with walk-in and appointment help on VA claims and appeals at offices in Greensboro and High Point. It does no claims work by phone or email. Its burial page still prints the old $300 allowances, and its GI Bill text wrongly says a veteran must have retired.
Also called: VSO, veterans service officer, VA claim, appeal, Greensboro, High Point, Meadowview Road, 336-641-4684.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
Guilford County Veterans Services helps veterans, spouses and dependants living in the county file and track claims for VA, State and county benefits: compensation, pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, aid and attendance, adapted housing and automobile grants, education, home loan certificates, health care enrolment, vocational rehabilitation, burial and special licence plates, and appeals. It says it is accredited through the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, the State and the American Legion.
Where. Greensboro: Henderson Building, 2301 W. Meadowview Road, 27407, 336-641-4684, Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon. High Point: 325 E. Russell Ave., 27260, 336-641-7929, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are encouraged and walk-ins accepted.
How. For privacy the office "does not provide consultations, complete claims work or give claim specific information via email or telephone", and warns that emailed documents may be blocked or delayed. Come in during client hours. Claim details are discussed only with the veteran or an appointed fiduciary. The office also warns against "claim sharks" who charge to file VA claims.
Two pages to read with care. The burial page gives "a burial allowance of $300 and a $300 plot or interment allowance" for a death not connected to service. VA pays $1,002 and $1,002 for a death on or after October 1, 2025, and $1,032 and $1,032 on or after October 1, 2026; the page's $2,000 for a service-connected death and its note that such claims have no time limit are right. And the office's summary of the Montgomery GI Bill says "Veterans must have retired with a fully honorable discharge". The Montgomery GI Bill requires an honorable discharge, not retirement; a veteran who served a qualifying term and left without retiring should check eligibility with VA before ruling it out.
