Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Thank a Vet programme of the Guilford County Register of Deeds gives veterans a photo ID card that participating businesses in the county honour with a discount. It has two aims, in the office's words: to "encourage veterans to register their original DD Form 214" and to obtain benefits for veterans through local businesses. It is free to veterans and to the businesses, and the Register publishes the list of merchants and their discounts, from percentages off to free items, each set by the business. How to get a card. Bring a photo ID (State driver licence or ID card, or military ID) and the original DD-214. If the DD-214 is already recorded with the office, staff check the record before issuing the card. Cards are issued from 8 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. at the Vitals Department, 201 W. Market St., Greensboro (first floor), and at 325 E. Russell Ave., Room 155, High Point. The discharge. Recording is the State's free service; see the North Carolina entry. The Register says "there is no charge to record or obtain a copy of a military discharge", and access to recorded discharges is restricted under G.S. 47-113.2. The office also collects worn American flags for dignified retirement by local Scouts, in boxes at both offices during business hours, under its Lance Cpl. Christopher "Jacob" Levy Flag Retirement Initiative.
