Guilford Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Guilford’s assessor presents the dwelling exemption for a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled at 100 percent through the text of the act that enacted it and an OLR question-and-answer, and proves the wartime exemption on a DD-214 filed with the Town Clerk by September 30.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Guilford.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s veterans information page posts, as the “newly passed Veteran Exemption for Permanently and Totally Disabled Veterans”, the text of House Bill 7067, whose section 4 rewrites the 12-81(83) dwelling exemption for assessment years commencing on or after October 1, 2024, and OLR Report 2024-R-0124, which answers questions about the exemption: it is mandatory, not a municipal option, and fully exempts the dwelling a veteran owns and lives in as a primary residence or, lacking one, one motor vehicle. The page asks callers with questions to reach the assessor’s office. The page’s eligibility sheet proves the wartime exemption under 12-81(19): a DD-214 filed with the Guilford Town Clerk by September 30, residency and record ownership on October 1, and 90 days of active duty in a period of war, or service in a combat or combat support role for the duration of a shorter campaign. A dischargee without a DD-214 appears before the assessor under oath and files two affidavits of disinterested persons. The sheet cites 12-93, 12-85 and 27-103 and prints no amounts; the wartime exemption is $1,000 of assessed value, with the 12-81g(a) additional exemption of twice that for income under the 12-81l limit, $46,300 single and $56,500 married for the 2026 grand list. No Guilford ordinance or local-option amount was found: the town’s code is on eCode360, which stayed behind its Cloudflare challenge (dubiousenvelope/vettoc issue 168), and Guilford did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey. Ask the assessor which local options Guilford has adopted.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
