Grand Traverse County's Guidance on the Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

Grand Traverse County's pages send disabled veterans to their township assessor for the State's full homestead exemption, but list only the 100% permanent and total and adapted-housing routes, leaving out individual unemployability, and the department's site still says to apply every year, which 2023 PA 150 ended from 2025.

Also called: property tax, disabled veteran exemption, 211.7b, Form 5107, assessor, township, unemployability, surviving spouse, Traverse City, Kingsley, Fife Lake, Interlochen, Williamsburg, Acme, Grawn, Buckley, Suttons Bay, Leelanau County.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's (MCL 211.7b; see the Michigan entry). It is claimed at the township or city assessor where the home is, not at the county. What the county says. The Veterans Affairs page: you are eligible "if you meet at least 1 of the following criteria: You have been determined by the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs to be permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service and are entitled to veterans' benefits at the 100% rate. You have a certificate ... that you have received pecuniary assistance under the Specially Adapted Housing Grant Program. You are a surviving, not remarried spouse"; bring the VA rating letter to the township assessor. The department's own site adds that the veteran and a surviving spouse file Treasury Form 5107 and says "This must be applied for each year." What it leaves out. Section 211.7b also covers a veteran rated individually unemployable, with no permanence requirement, and since 2023 PA 150 an exemption granted for taxes levied from January 1, 2025 stays in force without reapplying until rescinded or denied on audit. A veteran paid at the 100% rate for unemployability should apply, and one already exempt need not refile each year. Where. The county's List of Local Assessors gives each township's and city's assessor.
