The duty is the State's (1911 PA 235, MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry). The county's page: "Grand Traverse County provides a Veteran Burial Allowance of $300 for wartime era veterans and their spouses with limited resources to pay for funeral expenses." The criteria: 90 days of active duty for purposes other than training; and an estate under the asset limits, excluding the homestead and one car, of "$40,000, if there is a surviving spouse or if veteran has a dependent child under 18"; "For a veteran with no surviving spouse or dependent child under 18, there is no eligibility for this benefit if the veteran's assets equal or exceed the cost of the funeral and burial." Expeditionary medal holders may qualify for non-wartime service. How much is used. The department's FY2025 report counts six Grand Traverse applications ($1,800) and one from Leelanau ($300). The Veterans Affairs Committee administers the allowance and also sets government markers. Ask the department (231-995-6070) for the forms and the deadline.
