Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Gloucester grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors’ Personal Exemptions page and its Exemption Chart for fiscal 2026 give $800 under clause 22 (a 10 percent wartime-service disability, a Purple Heart or a Gold Star parent), $1,500 under 22A, $2,500 under 22B, $3,000 under 22C, a full exemption under 22D, $2,000 under 22E (a 100 percent rating, or disabled and unable to work) and a full exemption under 22F. Each is twice the statutory amount, which an additional exemption of up to 100 percent produces: clause 22J adds to the veterans’ alone and section 5C½ to every personal exemption. The chart’s clause 17D ($175) and 37A ($500) lines stay at the statute while its 41C line prints $1,000, twice that clause; the chart names no clause, and no council vote was found in the city’s online records, so ask the assessors what produced the amounts. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Gloucester Veterans’ Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
