Gila County owns the Pleasant Valley Veterans Retreat at 154 Ranger Station Road, Young, a restored Forest Service compound of cabins, barracks rooms, lodges and RV sites open to all veterans and their families; the county's fee schedule from January 1, 2026 is $110 a night for a cabin, $25 for a barracks room and $20 for an RV site, and the non-profit Pleasant Valley Veterans Retreat, Inc. aims to cover the fees so that no veteran pays. What it is. The retreat sits on more than 300 acres on Ranger Station Road in Young, Forest Service land the county holds under a special use permit while its conveyance to the county is pending, with a historic 1930s cabin on the National Register, rebuilt with about $2.3 million of the county's federal pandemic (ARPA) money and county capital funds and backed by a $3,000,000 State appropriation through the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services. The county's Facilities and Land Management Department runs it; the Board's July 28, 2026 review counted 185 guests in 2024. Its own site: "The retreat is open to all veterans, regardless of service branch or era, providing a welcoming space for relaxation and camaraderie among veterans and their families." It has family cabins, shared barracks, lodges for groups, a game room, a business centre, a gazebo and trails into the Tonto National Forest.
What it costs. The fee schedule the Board adopted on December 16, 2025, effective January 1, 2026, a "Reduced Cost Recovery Model" meant to ensure "affordability for veterans and qualifying organizations": a private furnished cabin $110 a night; a single room in the barracks $25 a night; group barracks (six or more rooms) $250 a night; an RV site with water and electric hook-ups $20 a night; full-day group use of the grounds and meeting space $400 a day. Rates include basic utilities. At the hearing the Facilities director said the county and the non-profit Pleasant Valley Veterans Retreat, Inc. were working toward the "overall goal for no veteran to have to pay", with the non-profit to pay veterans' fees through a reservation coupon code under a licence agreement; that agreement was still being worked out at the Board's September 29, 2026 update. The non-profit's board holds back 10 percent of all donations toward its mission that "no veteran has to pay". Ask, when booking, whether your stay is covered.
How to book. Call the front desk, 928-402-4367, weekdays 9 to 5, or use the contact form on pleasantvalleyveteransretreat.com; reservations are required before arriving. Whether non-veterans may book the RV sites was still under review against the Forest Service permit in December 2025.
