Gila County Assessor: Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption
The Gila County Assessor takes the State's veterans exemption from January 2 to March 1, first claims in person at Globe or Payson: a veteran rated 100% by the VA has the primary residence fully exempt, with no value limit. The page leaves out the smaller exemption for lower ratings, and the Board of Supervisors redeemed late claims from 100% veterans in April 2026.
Also called: property tax, assessor, 42-11111, 42-11153, disabled veteran exemption, March 1, waiver, redemption, Board of Supervisors, $4,873, 928-402-8714, 928-472-7973, Globe, Payson, Miami, Star Valley, Hayden, Winkelman, Pine, Strawberry, Young, Tonto Basin, San Carlos.
The exemption is the State's, under A.R.S. 42-11111; the Arizona entry gives the tax year 2026 text and House Bill 4168's changes from tax year 2027. The Gila County Assessor (Sherra Kissee) decides claims.
What the Assessor's page says for tax year 2026. "For Disabled Veterans with a 100% disability rating from the VA: $NO CAP on the allowable exemption amount on Primary Residence." If the veteran owns other property, $4,873 of assessed value is the allowance: what the home's primary assessed value does not use up goes to the other property. "For Disabled Veterans with a 100% disability rating from the VA, there is NO LIMIT on the Total Assessed Property Value of property owned in Arizona." "Veterans must include a disability rating letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Honorable Discharge is required." The page prints the 2025-income limits ($39,865, or $47,826 with a child under 18 at home) as the programme's, but the Assessor told the Board on April 7, 2026 that under the new law "there is no income or valuation cap for veterans, but there is for widows, widowers, and disabled persons". The State's own veterans affidavit for 2026 (DOR 82514V, revised December 2025) still has the veteran swear to the same income limits, which matches the tax year 2026 text the Arizona entry describes; the limit falls away for veterans from tax year 2027. Veterans disability pensions are not counted as income in any case.
What it leaves out. The statute also gives a veteran rated below 100 percent an exemption of the year's amount ($4,873 for 2026) times the rating; the Gila page names only the 100% veteran. A veteran rated below 100 percent should still file the veterans affidavit (DOR 82514V).
How and when. "Exemption Applications are accepted January 2nd - March 1st." "First Time Applicants MUST APPLY IN PERSON at the Assessor's Office in Globe or Payson. Applicants must provide a driver's license." Globe: 1400 East Ash Street, 928-402-8714 or 1-800-304-4452 (Arizona only). Payson: 707 South Colcord Road, Suite 102, 928-472-7973. Weekdays 8 to 5.
Missed March 1. A.R.S. 42-11153(B) lets a person with a disability exempt under 42-11111 ask the Board of Supervisors to redeem the waived exemption at any regular meeting; taxes already due when the petition is filed are not refunded. Gila's Board does this: on April 7, 2026 it granted 100% disabled veterans' petitions for tax year 2026, among them one who waited for an income tax return and one who "missed the filing deadline due to a lack of awareness of the program", and more on April 21. Ask the Assessor for the petition and file it as soon as possible.
