The exemptions are the State's; see the New York entries on Real Property Tax Law 458-a (the alternative veterans exemption) and 458-b (the Cold War veterans exemption) for the amounts and eligibility. What the county adds is what it grants and how the claim runs. What the county has adopted. The Legislature's local-law list, filed with the Secretary of State from 1951 through 2026, carries the veterans exemptions the county has enacted: "Local Law Two: A Local Law in Relation to Extending a Real Property Tax Exemption for Cold War Veterans (Resolution 81; 3/1/18)" and its original "Local Law Two: Local Law in Relation to Enacting a Real Property Tax Exemption for Cold War Veterans (Resolution 208; 6/11/08)"; and for the alternative veterans exemption "Local Law Three: Amending Local Law No. Two of the Year 1985 as Last Amended by Local Law No. Two of the Year 1997 in Relation to the Alternative Veterans Exemption on Real Property (Resolution 84; 2/14/01)" and its earlier amendments (1997, 1990, 1987, 1985). The 2025 and 2026 local laws - salaries, the coroner, the mortgage recording tax and the youth-hunting amendment - include no veteran exemption law, so the county grants no 458-a(11) full exemption for permanent and total disability yet; a town, the city or a school district may act on its own. How the claim runs. The Veterans Service Agency's own page puts it to the veteran: "Veterans Property Tax Exemption - New York State offers property tax exemptions for qualifying veterans and certain family members. Eligibility depends on the exemption, military service, property ownership, local adoption, and other requirements. Veterans should contact their local assessor to determine which exemptions are available and how to apply." The agency's 2024 annual report counts the office's own work on them: "We have completed 121 Veterans' property tax exemptions." Where. Applications go to the veteran's town or city assessor; the agency helps at Genesee County Building #2, 3837 West Main Street Road, Batavia; (585) 815-7905.
