Geauga County Auditor: Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption

The Geauga County Auditor, 231 Main Street, Suite 1A, Chardon (440-279-1617), takes the State's disabled veteran homestead credit on DTE 105I by December 31, but its homestead page describes only the age and disability credit; the Commissioners voted in November 2025 not to add House Bill 96's optional local homestead credit.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The credit is the State's (Revised Code 323.151 and 323.152; see the Ohio entry for the amount, the unemployability route and the surviving spouse rule). The Geauga County Auditor, Charles E. Walder, takes the applications at 231 Main Street, Suite 1A, Chardon, OH 44024; (440) 279-1617, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; paper only, with an original signature, by December 31 for real property. What the Auditor's page says. Its homestead page lists the "Application for Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses" (DTE 105I) among its documents and says the exemption helps "senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled residents and veterans", but its letter and FAQ describe only the ordinary credit on $29,000 of value for a resident 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled with income under $41,000; it does not give the larger disabled veteran amount or say that it has no income test. The DTE 105I it posts is the State's revision of September 2016, which describes the credit as "up to $50,000 of the market value"; the amount has since been indexed, and the Ohio entry has the current figure. The form does take a veteran with "a total disability rating for compensation based on individual unemployability". A denied applicant may complain to the Board of Revision on DTE 106B. No local addition. House Bill 96 (2025) lets a board of county commissioners add a local homestead or owner-occupancy credit paid by the county's own levies (319.304). On November 18, 2025, after the Auditor and several school districts set out what it would cost them, the Geauga Commissioners voted 3-0 "to not implement the Piggyback Provisions on either the Owner-Occupied Credit or the Homestead Exemption from House Bill 96".
