Garfield County Assessor: Senior, Disabled Veterans, and Gold Star Spouse Exemptions
The Garfield County Assessor's exemption page administers the State's disabled-veteran exemption - 50 percent of the first $200,000 of actual value of the primary residence for a veteran rated 100 percent permanent and total, with individual unemployability treated equivalently, a VA Summary of Benefits letter required, and the 2026 application 'turned in by July 1, 2026' - beside the senior exemption it dates to July 15 and its own Gold Star Spouse section; the Senate Bill 26-046 deadlines make 2026 claims July 1 and 2027 claims July 15, and the page's two halves carry one deadline each.
Also called: Assessor, disabled veteran exemption, senior exemption, Gold Star Spouse, Referendum E, 50 percent, $200,000, 100 percent permanent and total, individual unemployability, VA Summary of Benefits, July 1, July 15, 39-3-202, 39-3-203, 39-3-206, SB26-046, 970-945-9134, 109 8th Street, Suite 207, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, Carbondale, New Castle, Silt, Parachute, Battlement Mesa.
The exemption is the State's; see the Colorado entries. The Assessor's "Senior, Disabled Veterans, and Gold Star Spouse Exemptions" page is the county's own working of it, at 109 8th Street, Suite 207, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 (Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 970-945-9134, fax 970-945-3953).
The disabled-veteran text. "In 2006, Colorado voters approved Referendum E, amending section 3.5 of Article X of the Colorado Constitution ... For disabled Veterans who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 of actual value of the Veteran's primary residence is exempted. The state will reimburse the Garfield County Treasurer for the lost revenue. Owners of multiple residences may only designate one property as their primary residence. To qualify for the exemption the Veteran must: The Veteran sustained a service-connected disability while serving on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. The Veteran was honorably discharged. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has rated the Veteran's service-connected disability as one hundred percent permanent and total. For the purposes of eligibility, a veteran who has individual unemployability status shall be treated equivalently to a veteran who has a service-connected disability that has been rated as one hundred percent permanent disability. The Veteran must own the property and must have been an owner of record since January 1 of the current year. The Veteran must occupy the property as his or her primary residence and must have done so since January 1 of the current year. The property must be classified as residential. The application must include a copy of the Veteran's VA Summary of Benefits letter ... The application must be turned in by July 1, 2026."
The calendar the page prints. The senior half of the same page says "You must apply by July 15" and "The application must be turned in by July 15, 2026", while the disabled-veteran half says July 1, 2026 - the two State deadlines (Senate Bill 26-046 moves the regular deadline to July 15 and the late deadline to August 15 only from the 2027 filing season, so 2026 claims ran on July 1). A veteran filing in 2027 reads the State entry's July 15; the page carries one date per half and no late-application route (C.R.S. 39-3-206's good-cause August 15 route is the State entry's).
The Gold Star Spouse section. "In 2022, Colorado Voters Approved Referendum E, amending section 3.5 of Article X of the Colorado Constitution ... expanded the senior property tax exemption to include 'Gold Star Spouses.' For Gold Star Spouses who qualify 50 percent of the first $200,000 of actual value of their primary residence is exempted ... The application must include a copy of the Veteran's VA Summary of Benef[its] letter." (The county's own heading dates the Gold Star expansion to a 2022 vote of "Referendum E" - Referendum E is the 2006 measure; the Gold Star spouse exemption came by later legislation, which the State entries carry.)
