Gallatin County Motor Vehicle: Military and Veteran Registration
The county treasurer's motor vehicle offices in Bozeman and Belgrade issue veteran and disabled veteran plates and apply active-duty fee exemptions: an MV53 signed by a unit officer exempts certain fees for qualifying active-duty members; veteran plates need a DD-214 showing an honorable discharge; disabled veteran plates need a VA letter at 100 percent, and the Purple Heart version a 50 percent letter plus the DD-214, exempting fees on up to two vehicles.

Vehicle registration and plates are county functions in Montana, and the Gallatin County Motor Vehicle Department publishes its own rules for the military and veteran paths.
Active-duty fee exemptions. Active-duty service members may qualify for registration fee exemptions by submitting an MV53 (Application for Military Registration) for each vehicle titled or registered, signed by both the member and a unit officer, in addition to the normal paperwork. The exemption applies to a member who joined the military in Montana and is stationed outside the state, or who joined in another state but is stationed in Montana on active-duty orders. A new, current MV53 is required each renewal year; without it the exemption is removed and regular fees apply.
Veteran plates. Standard veteran plates require a DD-214 showing an honorable discharge. The vehicle must be titled in the veteran's name; a spouse cannot receive veteran plates unless the veteran is a co-owner; vehicles titled to a business do not qualify. Veteran plates carry no fee exemption unless the applicant also has a 100 percent disability rating letter from the VA.
Disabled veteran plates. Disabled Veteran plates function as disability placards, allowing parking in disabled spaces while honoring service. They require a letter from the VA showing the veteran is rated 100 percent disabled or paid at the 100 percent rate for a service-connected disability. Purple Heart Disabled Veteran plates also serve as disability placards and require a VA letter showing a 50 percent or higher rating and a DD-214 confirming the Purple Heart. Many registration fees are waived for these plates, and the disabled veteran fee exemption can be applied to up to two vehicles at a time.

Veteran plates on an honorable DD-214; disabled veteran plates on a VA letter
Standard veteran plates require an honorable-discharge DD-214 and no rating; disabled veteran plates require a VA letter at 100 percent (Purple Heart version at 50 percent plus the decoration). Recorded so the rating filter never hides the entry.
