Anyone can nominate a Gage County veteran for the county’s Veteran Honors Recognition: the Veterans Service Office picks from the applications, and the veteran is honoured at a Board of Supervisors meeting with time to speak and a certificate of appreciation, a mug and a pen; the Board honoured Vietnam veteran Danny DeLong on August 5, 2026.
Also called: Veteran Honors, Veteran of the Month, Veterans Honor Award, recognition, nomination, Danny DeLong, Beatrice, Wymore, Blue Springs, Adams, Cortland, Filley, Liberty, Odell, Clatonia.
The program. The county's Veteran Honors Recognition exists "to publicly show appreciation for Gage County Citizens who have served in the Armed Forces in service of the United States of America." The application on the Veterans Services page asks for the veteran's name, address, branch and dates of service, who is submitting it and their relationship to the veteran, and a narrative of the veteran's service, and goes back to the Veterans Service Office, 619 N. 7th Street, Beatrice. The form says one veteran will be selected each month from the returned applications; the officer presents the veteran to the Board's chairperson, the name is put on the Board's regular agenda, and the veteran is given time at the meeting to speak about his or her service and receives a certificate of appreciation, a mug and a pen.
In practice. The form's PDF was made in 2013, and the honours are less frequent than monthly: the Board's minutes of January 2025 to October 14, 2026 record one, on August 5, 2026, when Mr. Mick introduced Danny DeLong, who served in the Army from July 28, 1969 with the 101st Airborne Division and holds the Vietnam Service Medal and the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster among other decorations. Family members or friends who want a veteran honoured should send in the form.
