Gadsden County Property Appraiser: Veteran Exemptions

Gadsden County's Property Appraiser (16 South Calhoun Street, Quincy, 850-627-7168) takes exemption applications by March 1, but its exemptions page names only a total exemption for a "100 percent military service-related disability" and leaves out the $5,000 exemption for a 10% rating, and the combat discount form it posts is the 2012 version without the surviving spouse carryover.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; the Florida entries explain them. The Gadsden County Property Appraiser, Reginald A. Cunningham, CFA, grants them at 16 South Calhoun Street, Quincy (850-627-7168, fax 850-627-0396, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Its site answers 403 to plain requests and was read in a visible browser window. What its pages say. The exemptions page: "Exemptions of $5,000 are extended to widows, widowers and the disabled. ... Those with 100 percent military service-related disability and non-profit and religious organizations may qualify for total property tax exemption." "Military personnel transferred out of Florida can retain their exemption by bringing a copy of their orders." Applications are due by March 1, and next year's can be filed from March 2 through December 31. The forms page carries the DR-501 (effective November 2023), the DR-501DV combat discount application, the DR-501M deployed military exemption and the DR-416 and DR-416B certifications. Where the pages are narrower than the law. - They never mention the $5,000 exemption under section 196.24 for a veteran disabled 10% or more, or its carryover to a surviving spouse; the DR-501 the office posts lists it, so ask for it by number. - "100 percent" is not the statute's test: section 196.081 asks for a service-connected total and permanent disability, which a VA rating paid at 100% through individual unemployability also meets, and it carries over to the surviving spouse. - The DR-501DV the office posts is the December 2012 revision. It still prints the old residence-at-entry rule (with a note that the 2012 amendment removed it) and has no section for a surviving spouse, while the Department of Revenue's current form (revised November 2021) lets the discount carry over to an unremarried surviving spouse who stays in the home and has a notice for a spouse who moves. Use the Department's current form. - The wheelchair veteran exemption (section 196.091) and the surviving spouse of a servicemember who died on active duty appear only on the DR-501.
