Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Department of Veterans Service operates two state veterans cemeteries. Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Glennville is 8819 U.S. Highway 301, Glennville, GA 30427, phone (912) 654-5398. Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Milledgeville is 2617 Vinson Highway, Milledgeville, GA 31061, phone (478) 445-3363. That address is the cemetery, not the war veterans home on the same highway. Each cemetery has a welcome center, a chapel, in-ground graves, and a columbarium. There is no charge for the gravesite, the vault, the marker, or use of the committal chapel for an eligible veteran, spouse, or eligible family member. The family pays the funeral home for the casket, preparation of the body, transportation, and the service itself. The department says burial eligibility follows the rules used for VA national cemeteries. Its requirements page includes a veteran separated under other than dishonorable conditions, a reserve or National Guard member who was eligible for retirement pay at death or who would have been eligible but for being under 60, a reserve member who completed a full term and died on or after August 1, 1990 after an honorable termination, and an eligible dependent. A dependent page includes an unmarried child under 21, or a child with a lifelong dependency. A DD-214 or other proof of service is required, and a marriage certificate is required for a spouse. Apply to the cemetery. House Bill 985 of 2026, Act 441, rewrote Code section 38-4-70 from July 1, 2026. A reserve component member now qualifies by reference to the federal Burial Equity for Guards and Reserves Act of 2021 and 38 U.S.C. 2402(a)(5) as in effect on January 1, 2026, and the section's definition of reserve component includes the Space Force Reserve. A Hmong or Laotian special guerrilla unit veteran of February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 who was a Georgia resident at death and a lawful permanent resident qualifies on a family member's affidavit of service, corroborating affidavits and naturalization record. The Veterans Service Board may admit a person whose circumstances are in substantial but not complete compliance. The federal criminal-offense bars in 38 U.S.C. 2411 now apply. The section also keeps the department's authority to charge a burial fee per person, based on the national cemetery allowance or another amount the commissioner sets, although the department's page describes no charge for an eligible veteran. This is a state cemetery. It does not replace a VA national cemetery.
