Georgia Disabled Veteran License Plates

Free disabled veteran plates for up to two passenger cars or motorcycles, with no registration fee, manufacturing fee, or annual fee, for a veteran who qualifies for the disabled-veteran homestead test.

Also called: DV plate, license plate, registration, tag, 40-2-69, 100%.

For: Veteran or service member, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Code section 40-2-69 issues free motor vehicle license plates to a totally disabled veteran. The statute defines that term by pointing at paragraph (1) of subsection (a) of section 48-5-48: a 100% total disability, compensation at the 100% rate for individual unemployability, or a statutory award for loss of use of a foot or hand, loss of sight, or the defined permanent impairment of both eyes. The veteran has to be a Georgia resident and furnish a VA letter. The Department of Veterans Service says there is no registration fee, no manufacturing fee, and no annual fee. The plates are not issued for a motor home. Up to two passenger vehicles, or up to two motorcycles, may be plated for personal use. A motorcycle version of the plate exists. Once eligibility is established, free plates or revalidation decals continue. The department says an unremarried surviving spouse of a qualified veteran can receive the plate. The statute extends the free plate and decal to an unremarried surviving spouse or a minor child. A veteran who is disabled but does not meet the section 40-2-69 test may still qualify for a free plate under section 40-2-70. That plate is a different product. The one-vehicle tax exemption is also a different entry. The department's plate page says a veteran with a 100% service-connected rating is exempt from ad valorem tax on one vehicle, and it points readers to the tax page for the details.

Thresholds

Thresholds for Georgia Disabled Veteran License Plates
GateRule
100% service-connectedThe free plates use the disabled-veteran definition in the homestead statute. Up to two personal-use passenger cars or motorcycles. No registration, manufacturing, or annual fee on those plates. One path is a VA rating of 100% that is totally disabling.
Individual unemployability at the 100% rateThe other rating path is compensation at the 100% rate for individual unemployability. A statutory award for loss of a foot, hand, or sight, and eligibility for a specially adapted housing grant, are separate paths the rating filter does not test, so neither rating path hides this entry.

No change to benefits The version signed has no veteran provision; the free plates under Code section 40-2-69 did not change.

The General Assembly’s caption still reads "License Plates for Certain Veterans; the number of free license plates issued to certain veterans; increase". The version signed on May 11, 2026 revises license plate penalties, dealer plates and unregistered vehicle permits and contains no veteran provision; the free plates under Code section 40-2-69 did not change. Tracked because the caption describes a change that is not law.

What changed then:

  • Eligibility rule “Individual unemployability at the 100% rate” now reads: “The other rating path is compensation at the 100% rate for individual unemployability. A statutory award for loss of a foot, hand, or sight, and eligibility for a specially adapted housing grant, are separate paths the rating filter does not test, so neither rating path hides this entry.”
