Fremont County Assessor (Ella M. Riggs, Interim): the Veterans' Exemption, $6,000 of Assessed Value
The Fremont County Assessor (Interim Assessor Ella M. Riggs, 450 N. 2nd St., Room 200A, Lander, 307-332-1188, [email protected]) takes Wyoming's veterans exemption - $6,000 of assessed value from 2025, up from $3,000 - against the property tax on a principal residence or a motor vehicle, for honorably discharged wartime or campaign-medal veterans, veterans with a compensable service-connected disability and unremarried surviving spouses after three years' residence; the application or yearly signature is due by the fourth Monday in May.
Also called: Assessor, Ella Riggs, Ella M. Riggs, Veterans Exemption, Veterans Property Tax Exemption Application, $6,000, assessed value, fourth Monday in May, renewal form, signature by phone, principal residence, motor vehicle, surviving spouse, 39-13-105, [email protected], 307-332-1188, 450 N. 2nd St, Lander, Riverton, Dubois, Shoshoni, Hudson, Pavillion, Jeffrey City, Fort Washakie, Ethete, Arapahoe, Atlantic City, Crowheart, Kinnear.
The Assessor's words. "Administered by the County Assessor and Treasurer, this program aids qualified veterans by reducing property taxes on principle residences or motor vehicles. To receive the veteran's exemption, the Veterans Property Tax Exemption Application must be completed and returned to the Assessor's Office by the fourth Monday of May every year." "**Starting in 2025, the exemption amount will be $6,000 assessed value (up from $3,000). All applicable rules and application procedures are still in place.**" The lifetime cap of $800 was removed in 2007.
Every year. "If you have filed in the past, your signature is needed once a year to retain the exemption. You must sign by the fourth Monday in May every year by visiting the Assessor's Office. We can now also accept a signature by phone for principal residence claims." The page posts a renewal form. It puts the saving at "approximately $175 in property taxes" on a principal residence or "approximately $90 on a motor vehicle", and the residence saves more; a veteran who does not own a home can use it on a vehicle.
Who. "Pursuant to Wyoming Statute 39-13-105, to be eligible for the Wyoming Veterans Exemption, in addition to being a Wyoming resident for three years", an honorably discharged veteran of World War II (December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946), the Korean War emergency (June 2, 1950 to January 31, 1955) or the Vietnam War emergency (February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975); an honorably discharged veteran awarded the armed forces expeditionary medal or another service or campaign medal for an armed conflict in a foreign country (the page links the list of qualified medals); or a "Disabled veteran with a compensable service-connected disability certified by the Veterans Administration", with a VA verification form. A surviving spouse of such a veteran qualifies if both were Wyoming residents at the veteran's death, the spouse has three years' residence and has not remarried.
Where. Fremont County Assessor, 450 N. 2nd St., Room 200A, Lander, WY 82520; 307-332-1188, fax 307-332-1810; [email protected] for the exemption. Ella M. Riggs was appointed Interim County Assessor on September 29, 2026; her page notes her 20 years in the Air Force and National Guard and her post as 2nd Vice Commander of American Legion Post 33. The statute is in the Wyoming entries.
