City of Fredericksburg Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption

Fredericksburg's Real Estate Department in the Commissioner of the Revenue's Office takes the statewide home exemption for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total. Its page names the 2011 act, asks the applicant to confirm the parcel on GIS, and publishes no documentation list.

Also called: property tax, real estate tax, Fredericksburg property tax, 100% disabled, surviving spouse, Tax Relief Info.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Fredericksburg's Real Estate Department, in the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue at 715 Princess Anne Street, Room 107 (540-372-1207), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption on the house and up to one acre. The page describes it as "a statewide provision to provide real estate tax relief on the principal place of residence occupied by the veteran", points to the April 6, 2011 legislation, and asks the applicant to confirm the property is in the city on GIS before calling for an application and requirements. There is no income test. The documentation list the page promises is missing. The heading "Disabled Veteran Required Documentation" stands under the text with nothing beneath it, and the page sets no acreage, reapplication or surviving-spouse detail beyond the statute. The statute (Code of Virginia § 58.1-3219.5, a Commonwealth entry) covers the dwelling and up to one acre, lets a surviving spouse of a veteran who died on or after January 1, 2011 keep the exemption on any Virginia principal residence, and requires refiling only after a move; the page also quotes a "principal residence" definition from 13VAC10-190-10, a regulation about mortgage credit certificates, which is not the source of this exemption. What it is worth. The city bills real estate on a fiscal year of July 1 to June 30, at $0.84 per $100 of assessed value for the year from July 1, 2026, plus a fire tax of $0.01. The city's own budget hearings in April 2026 put about $136 million of taxable value outside the levy as tax relief for disabled veterans and the elderly or disabled together, a figure staff said had grown faster than new construction. Neither the page nor the ordinance mentioned individual unemployability; a veteran rated permanent and total on that basis should ask, since the Department of Veterans Services treats that rating as qualifying.
