City of Fredericksburg Tax Relief for the Elderly or Disabled

Fredericksburg relieves up to $3,000 of real estate tax for an owner who is 65 or older by June 30 or rated 100% disabled by the Social Security Administration, with income of $60,000 and net worth of $300,000 excluding the house, filed by May 1. Its page names only the Social Security Administration where the state statute also accepts VA, the Railroad Retirement Board or two physicians.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Elderly & Disabled Tax Relief program gives total or partial relief, to a maximum of $3,000 a year, on the real estate of an applicant who owns at least part of the home, occupies it as the sole dwelling, and is 65 or older by June 30 of the year before, or rated 100% disabled. The city's page states the disability proof as "rated 100% disabled by the Social Security Administration". Section 58.1-3213(D) of the Code of Virginia also lets a certification from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Railroad Retirement Board, or two physicians prove the disability, and the city page says only that "additional qualifications may apply"; a disabled veteran can file the VA certification. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use this program. Income and worth. Income from all sources of the applicant and related individuals living in the dwelling cannot exceed $60,000; the FAQ counts Social Security and counts dividends only when actually received, and no mortgage payment can be subtracted. Net combined financial worth, including equitable interests as of December 31 of the owners and spouses, cannot exceed $300,000, with the value of the house and lot excluded. The city sets these figures annually by City Council. Filing. Applications are mailed in March and due May 1; the city bills real estate on a fiscal year of July 1 to June 30, and an approved relief begins the next fiscal year. File with the Real Estate Department, Commissioner of the Revenue, 715 Princess Anne Street, Room 107 (540-372-1207).
