"Honorably discharged disabled veterans or their unmarried surviving spouses may be eligible for a reduction in property tax. The disabled veteran must be 100% totally and permanently disabled due to a service-related injury. There is no age or income limitation on this program. This program excludes up to the first $45,000 of the assessed value of the permanent residence of an honorably discharged veteran who has a total and permanent disability that is service-related or who received benefits for specially adapted housing under 38 U.S.C. 2101." "Once approved for the Disabled Veteran Exclusion, you do not need to reapply unless your disability or benefit status has changed." The Veterans Services page. "All AV-9 applications (PDF) (Applications for Property Tax Relief) must be filed no later than June 1st of each year. The NCDVA-9 ... has been certified by the local Veteran Office (State or County). Take the NCDVA-9 (PDF) and the AV-9 forms to the tax office of the county in which your real property is located. You only have to apply for this tax exemption once." It adds that the exclusion "may also be available to surviving spouses of veterans who passed away because of their service-connected disability and are receiving DIC". What the pages say differently. The Tax Office's "100% totally and permanently disabled" is the statute's total and permanent disability, which the NCDVA-9 records; a 100 percent rating that is not permanent may not qualify, and a permanent and total rating through unemployability may.
