Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Framingham grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. City Council Order 2025-003-001, passed February 25, 2025 by all eleven councilors and approved by the Mayor on February 27, accepts clause 22I, raising the clause 22, 22A, 22B, 22C, 22E and 22F exemptions each year by the Department of Revenue’s cost-of-living adjustment (2.9 percent for fiscal 2026 and 2.7 percent for fiscal 2027), and clause 22J, for fiscal years from July 1, 2025. The 22J paragraph of the attested order still reads “[insert percentage increase up to 100% e.g., 50%, 70%, 100%]”, so the order sets no additional amount; clause 22J requires the council to set it before the fiscal year begins. The assessors’ page and veterans’ checklist print no amount, so ask them for this year’s. The Chief Financial Officer’s memo of January 2, 2025 on the HERO Act notes that neither option is reimbursed by the Commonwealth, and that the motor vehicle excise exemption now follows the VA’s 100 percent or unemployability determination without local action. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Framingham Veterans’ Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
