Forsyth County Register of Deeds: Free DD-214 Recording and Thank A Veteran Discount Card
The Forsyth County Register of Deeds records a veteran's DD-214 free, in person only, and issues a free Thank A Veteran discount card, honoured by participating local businesses, to a veteran who shows the discharge and photo ID.
Also called: DD-214, discharge, Register of Deeds, Thank A Veteran, veteran discount, discount card, 47-113.2, Winston-Salem.
The discharge. Recording is the State's free service; see the North Carolina entry. The Forsyth County Register of Deeds says "There is No Fee to record the discharge form." The veteran or an authorised agent shows government-issued ID, and a discharge "must be filed in person by the authorized party. It can not be mailed to the Register of Deeds office to record or request copies." Its list of who may record or obtain a copy follows G.S. 47-113.2: the veteran, the widow or widower, an authorised agent of VA, an authorised court official, the State Archives, the executor of a deceased veteran, and an agent with the veteran's written authorisation. The statute also names agents of the State Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, and agents authorised by the widow or widower or by a court; the page leaves those out but they qualify.
Thank A Veteran. The Register issues a free Thank A Veteran Discount Card for discounts at participating local businesses, and publishes the merchant list. Bring the original DD-214 or a copy as proof of service (a certified copy is not needed; a discharge already recorded there can be checked instead) and a government-issued photo ID. Only the veteran can have a card; spouses and children cannot. It is not official identification and does not replace a VA card or military ID. Cards are issued Monday to Friday, 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.
