Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

In Fluvanna County the Commissioner of the Revenue, Lauren R. Sheridan, at 34 Palmyra Way, Palmyra (434-591-1940), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption. The county's Veterans Tax Relief page and its "Application for Real Property & Personal Property Tax Relief for Veterans with 100% Service-Connected Disability" ask for a certification of disability being "(a) 100% service-connected, AND (b) permanent, AND (c) total", a photo ID and a copy of a utility bill for the primary residence, and, for a surviving spouse, the veteran's death certificate showing death on or after January 1, 2011 and that the spouse has not remarried. Acreage. The exemption reaches five acres. Section 58.1-3219.5(C) of the Code of Virginia requires the veteran's exemption to cover the same number of acres the county's own relief reaches, and Fluvanna's relief for the elderly and disabled excludes from net worth the dwelling and land not exceeding five acres (section 20-3-3(E) of the county code). The county's veterans page and form do not mention the acreage; a veteran with more than one acre should check the bill and cite subsection C. What it is worth. The 2026 real estate rate is $0.755 per $100 of assessed value, with public service real estate and mobile homes at the same rate, approved by the Board of Supervisors; the June 3, 2026 minutes cite the $0.755 rate as current. Taxes are due in equal installments June 5 and December 5 (section 20-1-2). A veteran rated permanent and total on the basis of individual unemployability qualifies; the county's page does not mention it, and the Department of Veterans Services treats that rating as qualifying. Relief applications for the year are due March 31.
