Florida Tentative Verification of a Disabled Veteran Exemption Before Buying a Home
A disabled veteran or surviving spouse buying a Florida home can ask the county property appraiser, on form DR-501V, to say in advance whether the total and permanent exemption, the combat discount or the wheelchair exemption would apply. Appraisers may decline, and the answer does not bind them.
Also called: DR-501V, 196.092, tentative eligibility, home purchase, property appraiser, homestead, surviving spouse.
Section 196.092 of the Florida Statutes (chapter 2024-217) has the Department of Revenue provide a form, DR-501V, that a county property appraiser "may use, at his or her discretion" to give a veteran or surviving spouse tentative verification of eligibility for:
- the total and permanent disability exemption, and the surviving spouse exemptions, in section 196.081;
- the age-65 combat-related discount in section 196.082;
- the wheelchair veteran exemption in section 196.091.
How it works. Send the appraiser the same documents the exemption needs before buying. The appraiser marks the exemption the applicant appears to qualify for. It is not an approval: after the purchase, the owner must make the home a permanent residence by January 1 and file the homestead application, form DR-501, with the documents, by March 1.
Limits. An appraiser may refuse to consider a request, the verification "is not binding upon the county property appraiser", and neither the refusal nor the tentative answer can be appealed to the value adjustment board or a court under chapter 194. The $5,000 exemption under section 196.24 and the deployment exemption are not covered.
