Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Fall River grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessor’s Office exemption list (a file dated June 16, 2025, linked from its page as Exemption Information) gives $800 under clause 22, $1,500 under 22A, $3,000 under 22C and $2,000 under 22E, twice the statute, and full exemption under 22D, 22F and 22H; it does not list 22B. The same list gives the seniors $750 under 41C and $180 under 17D, which are not doubled, so the addition reaches veterans alone, which is what clause 22J does and section 5C½ does not. The list names neither, and the council’s vote was not found. Under 22D the list asks the surviving spouse for two consecutive years in Massachusetts before the tax year, or six months’ domicile by the service member before entering service. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Fall River Veteran’s Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
