Fairfield County Recorder: Discharge Recording and Veteran ID Cards

The Recorder records military discharges and offers veteran ID cards, but its pages publish neither eligibility nor a fee - just 'Please call the Recorder's Office for information' - so a veteran asks; the statute records a discharge free and would let the card cost up to $2.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, county recorder, veteran ID card, veterans identification card, discharge, Lisa McKenzie, recording.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Recording. Revised Code 317.24 requires the Recorder to record an honorable discharge (or an other-than-honorable one, marked as such) free, return the original at once with a certified copy, and keep it out of the public records; see the Ohio entry on county recorders. The Fairfield County Recorder, Lisa McKenzie, is in Suite 205 of the county courthouse annex at 210 East Main Street, Lancaster (740-652-7100), weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its page lists "deeds, mortgages, leases, liens, plats, powers of attorney, and military discharges" among what it records, and sends fee questions to the Ohio Recorders Association's schedule ($34.00 for the first two pages and $8.00 for each additional page, under Revised Code 317.32) - which lists no discharge line, because the statute sets discharges free. The ID card. The Recorder's page carries a "Veteran ID Cards" section whose whole text is "Please call the Recorder's Office for information: 740-652-7100." Section 317.241 fills in the rest: the card is issued to a veteran whose recorded discharge is not dishonorable, on two forms of identification, one with a photograph, for a fee of up to $2. Record the discharge first, then ask the office what it charges and requires.
