Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Erie County Court of Common Pleas runs a Veterans Treatment Court alongside its Treatment Court, under President Judge Joseph M. Walsh III, with Adult Probation, the Public Defender, an assistant district attorney and a Mental Health case manager on its team, and veteran mentors. Who. "Any Veteran with substance abuse and/or mental health concerns is eligible to apply." Some pending charges or past convictions, crimes of violence or other risks to the community may disqualify. The court publishes no discharge test; its application (revised September 2025) asks the discharge type from honorable to dishonorable, whether the veteran receives VA compensation or VA health care, and whether any case involves a weapon. Participants get treatment, counselling, education and job training, housing and transportation help, with random drug testing and regular court reviews, in phases. How. Apply with the District Attorney's Office, through defence counsel, on the courts' Veterans Treatment Court application, or ask at the Court Administrator's, District Attorney's or Public Defender's office. The county site's Treatment Court page links an older 2022 application that now returns "not found"; use the courts' site. Coordinator: Craig Montgomery, Adult Probation, Erie County Courthouse, 140 West Sixth Street (814-451-6392). Veterans can volunteer as mentors on the courts' mentor application; the Department of Veteran Services recruits them too.
