Elko County Recorder: Recording a Copy of a DD-214 at No Charge

The Elko County Recorder's FAQ states plainly that the office "will accept a copy of a DD214 (military discharge) for recording at no charge" - a copy, where most offices require the original - and prices general recording at $37 with e-recording through Simplifile, CSC and EPN.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder, discharge papers, NRS 419.020, no charge, copy of a DD214, Simplifile, CSC, EPN, e-recording.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Elko County Recorder goes further in its FAQs (read 2026-10-26), and the wording is the local fact: "Can I Record a Copy of a Document? No. Documents must be original to be recorded. However, we will accept a copy of a DD214 (military discharge) for recording at no charge." That answers two questions at once. A veteran whose original DD-214 is lost, or who does not want to hand over the only original, can record a copy in Elko County - the office the statute gives no discretion to charge - and the office says so on its own page. The general recording fee is $37, and documents can be filed in person, by mail or electronically through Simplifile, CSC or EPN. What the FAQ does not say is whether a recorded discharge appears in the public index; recorded documents in Nevada are generally open to public inspection, so a veteran weighing whether to record a DD-214 should ask the Recorder how it is handled first. Recording a discharge is always optional.
